I don't know slackware but at least on my Debian Etch I get the same behaviour from dnsdomainname while my "hostname" is an arbitrary name I gave to my computer "picton". It's a name which has nothing to do with the outside world. On Debian, this is set in a file called /etc/hostname. Do you have such a file on Slackware? Can you lookup where in the init sequence the "hostname" command is called to set it? Is your host with a public IP address and a fully qualified domain name? Just some things to look at.
