Thank you to all those who replied to my post and my apologies for not saying so sooner.

My problem was that, when I followed instructions that I'd been given to create a connection between two computers using pppd, no connection was created.

To me this sounds like a "black magic" kind of solution, but the problem has gone away, so who am I to complain?

The instructions I'd been following hadn't told me on which of the two computers I was to run the pppd command first and I'd taken it that I was to do it first on the sending machine.

After many failures, I ran the command first on the receiving machine and the connection was established immediately.
