If its Core 2 Duo then its not ia64. Ia64 if the Intel/HP Itanium
chip while Core 2 Duo is x86_64. They are *very* different CPUs.


Thanks, that was the right answer.

Once I downloaded the netinst for amd64 and put on a USB memory stick
everything worked beautifully - got a graphical expert interface, got the
LVM running, Grub installation recognized the partition of that other OS,
and I even got X11 running out of the box without having to do anything,
although I suspect I can tweak it to squeeze out more out of this graphics
card. All this without having to do *anything* beyond running the debian
installer.
