This is just an addendum to my former problems with slow startup of the "sendmail" daemon and queue runner. I finally had occasion to reboot my machine and the delays are entirely gone, so that problem is definitely solved.
I still have no DNS domain name, however. I noticed that the contents of "/etc/HOSTNAME" had been truncated to just the part before the first dot, probably after a reconfiguring of "rc.inet1/rc.inet1.conf". Adding the parts after the first dot, however, made no difference: "dnsdomainname" still returns nothing, although the command is successful. Maybe this has something to do with my "/etc/resolv.conf" file, which at present only has my ADSL modem IP address after its single "nameserver" entry: it got automatically written that way when I connected to broadband. Not having a DNS domain name is not a problem. "Sendmail" uses a host and domain name alias and works fine. I remain, however, curious about what is going on.
