Gave up on ATI as didn't want hassle of installing proprietory driver with every new kernel ( or installing it at all really).
Bought an Nvidea GForce card today. Installed it on PC running Kubuntu 6.10, booted, entered Sys Setup/Display and set to 16:9 ( everything else was automatic). Works 100%, desktop located properly on screen.
