Thanks for your advice and assistance. I have installed Abiword 2.4.6 and 2.5.2 from source using
./configure --with-fribidi --prefix=/home/... and can open either from terminal, and 2.4.6 from also from the menu (possibly because I did not initially specify a location to install so it used defaults which may be overwritten during the next Abiword apt-upgrade). I'll continue with a pinned Etch and Sid system because it gives me access to more recent pkgs such as Scribes text editor and 'epdfview'. I'm having trouble install plugins, docs, and extras in 2.5.2 .. getting "No package 'abiword-2.5' found" .. a different name from /home/adam/Abiword-2.5.2 .. perhaps I should rename it 'abiword-2.5' In any case, I have two compiled backups allowing me to work while the debian version resolves itself.
