I notice a huge difference in speed with the number of emails. I have
pretty good hardware but my slug folder can slow at times.

Sometimes the indexes get stuffed up so I remove the indexing and let it
be rebuilt. If I remove everything but slug, the indexes rebuild
automatically on restart.

There are filters (moving messages around) and rules (they stay in place
but are selectable). I never use rules because they take a long time on
large sets.

Remember to empty trash. The mails stay in the folder until the trash
is emptied and this can affect file size therefore performance.
