Maybe you need to use the -noapic option while booting. AMD machines can 
need this. Sometimes with the install, there is a "Install with special 
options" option, sometimes accessed via F4 when you're at the initial 
choices area of your install CD.

YMMV, but with a recent install, when I typed "-noapic" during the install
process, that option was included in the grub options. This was with Ubuntu.
