I am not very good at configuring modules and IO/IRQ which seem complex to

That's true. The default route on the Linux server would ultimately pipe all
internet-bound traffic via 1 port/link. This isn't much concern when I can
only get 2 mbits out of my ADSL2+ connection (ie. the internet
downstream/upstream remains slower than my LAN).

But if I set up Squid or other centralised services on the Linux server the
multiport NICs would better balance the requests at 100 mbits between other
segments on the internal network. It would take a while to build the cache
but once done hopefully it'll optimise internet usage for everybody on my
network.

So I was trying to implement a kind of interactive poor-man's CISCO :)
