No the kernel in 2007 does not automatically update. This also applies
to KDE and Gnome.

Desktop environments need to update from MCC or using urpmi in an
alternate environment. Is is recommended to urpmi to do is if using
mulitple desktop environments due to dependencies with existing
applications.

Kernel upgrades are recommended from urpmi for the same reasons.
