HP lasers work well in my experience. Currently Laserjet 4000TN (mono) and I've also used a 4500DN (colour behemoth)
The 4000TN has printed over 3000 pages on the toner that came with it (second hand). I've been dutifully carrying a second toner with me as I moved house 4 times over the past 2 years, but have had no call for it as yet. The remanufactured toners are quite cheap - $80 for a 6,000-10,000 page unit. I have also used a Fuji Xerox C525A that had Linux drivers with it. Unfortunately I was using Ubuntu and they were in RPM, so I tried to use alien, but ended up having to just manually shower a selection of directories with bits of what was in the RPM and then it finally worked.
