it would seem though that the Open Source version lacks the prime
feature Carlos wants - "Scan documents into the repository"

What it could not do a couple of versions ago was to scan "directly" into the repository. Likewise the FOSS version did not support drag and drop from the desktop.

What you do is to scan your document and then upload it using a "browse" type function. It's very quick and very easy to use. It also features full text indexing of most document types which is automatic. As you upload the document the text is grabbed and auto-indexed. I have a customer with 400,000+ documents that can find a specific one by text searching for a word in about 3 seconds.

Also does bulk upload - point it to a folder (or tree) with documents and it will create the same structure in the repository automatically - a huge bonus as you do not need to pre-create the corresponding folder structure. We do this every month with some 4,000+ new documents that are generated from a process that creates reports, converts them (eventually) to a pdf and then uploads them.

Hi I'm looking for an open source document management system (DMS)

There are some nice-looking FOSS DMSs out there. I'm in the very early stage
(just reading docs at the moment; no hands-on experience yet) of evaluating
solutions for my work. At the very simple end, you can just use a revision
control system like Subversion. It's worked well at a previous workplace, and
it'll probably be fine for your personal use. For something more document
focused, there's Jackrabbit and Plone, and at the serious high end there's
Alfresco.

Run, don't walk to http://www.knowledgetree.com.

Been using it for the last few years and installing it at customers -
wouldn't trade it for anything so far.
