A crucial piece of information required to answer this question properly is
the brand/model of your video chipset. If you have an Intel video chipset,
it may be as simple as installing the '915resolution' on your Debian/Ubuntu
based system. Fedora probably includes it by default.

You might also want to compare and contrast /etc/X11/xorg.conf between your
Fedora and Ubuntu installs.
