Thanks all, the tip about /etc/sudoers looks like it will make it 
easier, and yeah it seems that the insmod has to be done later in the 
boot sequence after the NextG modem has powered up.

I seem to have it working now except that kppp won't start/run unless 
it's within a terminal (sigh!)
