Gaim (or Pidgin, the new name) is what you want.

If you have a Hotmail address, you already have an MSN messaging account. If
you don't have a Hotmail address, you'll have to register for one or just an
MSN 'passport' account.

Then you just type your details into the "Add Account" dialogue. :-) Seems
they don't have step-by-step docs.
