Thankyou to everyone (David, Heracles, The Reverend) for replying.

Heracles, I first tried your suggestion of creating a test user and
logging in - I'll file it away in my toolbox. I got the same error under
the test user - interesting.

The above suggestion worked (going into gconf-editor, etc). The thread
was interesting - I too am having problems with the 7.10 kernel and have
gone back to the 7.04 kernel. Thanks for the link - I now know to look
in Launchpad first :-)

Simon, out of interest, it's the same iAudio device as yours -
invaluable for listening to podcasts on 12 hour Mexican bus rides :-)
