I don't know the package that asks you to type the keys and
auto-magically determines the keyboard, so if you or anyone finds out,
I would like to know.  However, I do know that you can change the
keyboard this way (if you know the language layout)...

Old Debian/Ubuntu?
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-data

New Debian/Ubuntu?
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
