Phil,

I'm currently running dual monitors on FC5 with a Matrox G400. I have my machine setup dual boot with Gutsy but cannot get it to do dual monitors in spite of all the googling I've done.

My problem appears to be that it requires the binaries from Matrox to support the second screen. The open source drivers from Xorg just don't support this card in dual screen mode. Matrox have stopped supporting the binaries past xorg 7.0.0, but have released the source code (though I can't get it to compile on Gutsy yet). "X -version" on Gutsy give 1.3.0 which is kinda confusing as the older FC5 gives 7.0.0. So I'm currently stuck with FC5 until I can get a driver for the card that supports dual screens to load into Xorg 1.3.0.

I can send you my org.conf file that works in FC5, if that helps but honestly it's nothing special and you are using different cards anyway. There are lots and lots of examples on the net of twin screen setups but I've tried them all and none of them work (besides you'd think that my best chance was the config I have for FC5 that does work). I think that you're problem is probably the same as mine, that is there's an issue with the driver, maybe there is some config option that you can put into xorg that will put the card into dual screen mode, but I don't know what that might be.

Not sure this helps you much accept that you're not alone with being unable to get Gutsy to run dual.

Thanks Pete. Sounds very simnilar to my experience - a thousand examples on the net and none of them work in my case. There has got to be something small missing...:(
