Thanks for your assistance Patrick and Alan. Citrix ICA Client Version 6.3 did behave differently from the newer clients - it returned an .ica file which unfortunately the system didn't know what to do with - Iceweasel with the npica.so plugin wasn't the right answer here. At the other end of the versions, 10.6 says it can't connect and wants to retry after 30 seconds.
