Having used Joomla once (ok maybe twice) and Drupal once, my first impression was Joomla was overly complicated where Drupal was clearer/simpler. I've had other people say similar things. Code is probably similar to usage experience, if you are looking to modify - but I can't vouch for it as I've never looked at their code (actually not true but only in the very vaguest of manner have I looked at the code for either). Not that I am pushing one or the other, but MySQL has spatial extensions also.
