NB: I've already sent the following to a Fedora forum, but hope you'll forgive my posting it here as well in the circumstances.
I've done something very stupid. My machine is dual booting, FC7 and FC3. I keep FC3 going because I can run on it an old version of Gnucash that has a "bug" I want that subsequent versions don't have. I tried to install that old version of Gnucash on FC7, but couldn't. Today, I decided to compile ClamAV for FC3. During the configuration stage, ClamAV told me I needed a newer version of zlib than I had, v 1.2.1. I downloaded and compiled zlib 1.2.3. I then re-ran the ClamAV configuration, but it failed again. I did some Googling and it seemed that the problem was that ClamAV wasn't recognising that I now had v 1.2.3 of zlib. Zlib v 1.2.1 had been installed via an RPM. I therefore tried to uninstall it using rpm, on the theory that if I got rid of 1.2.1, then ClamAV would recognise 1.2.3. I was told that various other things were dependent on 1.2,1, but I foolishly uninstalled it anyway. After that, I lost the ability to run FC3 normally. I booted up with a Knoppix cd and managed to get an RPM of zlib 1.2.1 into my FC3 home directory. I then booted up in text mode in FC3 and tried to install the zlib 1.2.1 RPM. I couldn't, because zlib was needed to install it!!! I have no idea what to try now. It's important to me to get FC3 going normally again because of all the Gnucash data. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions. I don't mind it you preface them by telling me I'm an idiot, though I know it already.
