Further to my post on nfs problems: I tempoorarily achieved nirvana when I opened up (on my eeepc) the file browser as root. As soon as this opened, the non-root file browser filled with the previously un-permissioned contents of the exports. I have not figured out why.
However, when I tried to play an avi it decided to copy the file to the local file system first, which immediately filled the drive. This made a reboot fail and I had to break into the boot menu to select a factory default rebuild. A severe problem, but on an eeepc it was almost like walking away from a worlds worst crash done in a simulator - no pain at all!
