Well, I have been there - done that (as VK2ZGK in former life).
If and I mean if, your got sufficient power (RF + PSU - not solar
unless your got BIG batteries) you can use packet-radio (max 9600 baud
= 9.6Kbps max realistically = 800 byte/sec) you can do it. Especially
at HF regencies. Anything greater needs UHF and your not going to
get the distance unless you do satellite work (70cm Up/2m Down) unless
your got more equipment again on top of the usual radio/packet/battery
stuff.
For all intention purposes, forget it, and let your friend enjoy their
time away from technology IMHO.
