This probably won't help, but I've given up on external USB drives completely because so many of them simply died on me. I've got four sitting in my "dead hardware" box. Maybe you have to pay extra for better cases - I didn't get the impression the drive was the problem.. I think it's the power supply or electonics on the external case.
