I'll just report back in. All three worked instantly for Hardy. The
USB one worked the moment it was plugged in, no restart required. The
Atheros based one required restricted drivers, but these were loaded
automatically.

The original machine in question is having kernel panics, but I'm
going to put that down to the motherboard as I doubt it is the wifi
card (it has the Edimax in it, but I'll swapping it along with the
motherboard, just in case).

For anyone who's looking for a card/dongle:
 * The Edimax came from Warcom on Denise Fernandez's recommendation.
It has an antenna on a cable and mentions Linux on the box :-)
 * Both the TP-Link cards came from Deals Direct (which means they are
not around indefinitely), but I have since seen them at mwave.com.au
as well. The PCI card has a regular antenna but it is
detachable/swappable.
