I've got Hardy running on a Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz with 2GB of RAM, but it won't multitask in a friendly manner.
In gnome, if I right click on a file and select "add to archive", various programs become intermittently non responsive. The problem affects Firefox, and the terminal. The file in question is 20GB (windows virtual machine). I've tried using System Monitor to reduce the priority of file roller, but it doesn't help. I assume it's because file roller is accessing the hard drive a lot for a 20GB compression - I don't know how to get it to deprioritise or go easy on its hard drive access - is this even possible? Things tend to work ok while I'm using them, eg. writing this email in Gmail. But when I switch applications or click on a link, the cursor won't always update properly and there can be a lengthy delay.
