The cost of recovery of the data by the places people mentioned turned out to be too great in the circumstances, especially given that I could reconstruct the data from other records and I've got plenty of time in which to do so (I'm retired).
I'm therefore taking the reconstruction route.
The place from which I bought the hard drive gave me a new replacement one today, with little questioning. I got the impression that they're replacing this drive (WD 320GB SATA) pretty regularly, since the fellow who helped me pulled a replacement out of a box of them right at hand beneath the counter.
Thanks again.
