3 aren't much good if you want decent coverage. They _only_ do 3G, and
if you want access in a non-3G zone prepare to pay through the nose
(you'll be roaming onto Telstra). Your choices in this matter are:

* just pay for it (I think it's charged at $1.65/MB)
* carefully monitor your connection, and disconnect whenever you lose 3G
* you can set the connection software to only use 3G (the Vodafone
software and newer versions of NetworkManager can do this)

Any of these is a real pain in the bum. Note that you can't assume
that you'll get a 3G signal in a metro area. Often you'll find your
connection flicking back and forth, particularly if you're on the move
(e.g. on a train).

I've given up on 3 and have moved to Exetel. They resell the Optus
network, and charge by usage (1.5c/MB) with a nominal access fee
($5/mth). Coverage isn't flawless, but it is affordable and still
better than 3.
