Thank to all those that have answered my call for help.

I can report that i have now recovered all data from the partition
overwrite and format. The System Rescue Cd did the trick.
Note i have just brought a second External HD to alternative the backups
on so i hope this will help prevent this type of dumb thing again.

Finally I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year from
my family and myself.

Lesson learned "  sleep is important, do not format, repartition and
install on little sleep, as something might and will go wrong"

did you install on to the external hard disk?

what format was the external hard disk before and after?
