Hi Linz.
I assume that the Ubuntu is either 8.04 or 8.10 with the gnome desktop
(it has the menu panel on the top of the screen and another panel on the
bottom).
If this is the case then go to the System menu then to Administration
and select network from this menu.
Click the unlock button at the lower right of the dialogue box and type
in your password.
Now, if you are using an ethernet connection to your modem/router
(assuming you have broadband) check that your card is listed there (It
will be called Wired Connection).
        
{If you have a modem it will be called point-to-point connection}

If it is ADSL then you should not really need to set anything up, it
should just work, as the username and password are in the router
configuration.

If you have a dialup modem setup then you will have to click on the
point-to-point connection and set it up. Let me know if this is the type
of connection and the type of modem and I will do what I can to help you
through the setup process.
