The new network manager applet in Ubuntu 8.10 handles these beautifully. I tried my "3" Huawei E169G modem in Jeff's laptop at the November SLUG. It took about 60 seconds to get it online.
I used to Use a Bigpond Maxon BP3-USB modem with a much earlier Ubuntu. it was easy to get going, but the drivers for more than 0.5Mbit required a kernel rebuild. Not sure what newer versions are like, as I don't use Bigpond anymore.
