This might not be completely useful but ... First of all after installing Kubuntu I had to use Wvdial. It was a bit fiddly and took some time to connect. Later on I installed... http://www.eeebuntu.org/ I now find that my 3 (shocking company - Vodafone are much better) mobile USB dongle is detected and automatically connects to 3 3G mobile broadband.
