I usually get this problem on a Debian machine. Just had to deal with
it on my iMac G3 when I did a Lenny PPC install.
If you had said KDE 4.xx I would have agreed with you but I'm running
Hardy LTS with Nvidia drivers and any old generic 17" monitor with
KDE 3.5.9 or thereabouts. Works for me :)
Thanks to the present KDE 4.xx issues (always happens when a new
version of KDE is released) I've switched to a Gnome desktop with a
minimal KDE installation. Such as Kmail and Konqueror and other
things. My Ubuntu 8.04 LTS xorg.conf is below.
