I upgraded from v 8.04 of Ubuntu to v 8.10. When I did, my desktop icons disappeared. I found others complaining of a similar problem in an inconclusive bug report. It seemed that useful information could be found in the .xsessions-errors file. I renamed my existing one and rebooted. The new file said this:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_AU. Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default. It seems as though I have a number of errors, though which, if any of them, relate to my missing desktop icons I don't know. Can anyone suggest any steps I should try in light of the above file to get my desktop icons back?
