Hi Daryl,
I have four versions of Linux on my main machine and each uses only
three partitions: /,  swap and /home
I see no need for others unless you wish to separate /tmp and /usr but I
think that this is overkill.

So, to answer your question, I recommend just two partitions (/ and
swap) on the smaller drive with /home on the larger as you propose.
