It has a network connections monitor built in, cpu monitor, can show your ip
address and data over the wire, so it does that and then some, plus it does
other stuff built in and with plugins, like control your media player etc.
You can also use the more updated gdesklets for gnome or Superkarumba for
KDE to do similar things iirc.
