I've set up an Ubuntu 9.10 box with 3 hard drive caddies plus 2 onboard permanent drives.

I added the second permanent drive after the initial installation, and I will be swapping various additional drives in the bays as required, up to a maximum of 5 drives.

I added this line to fstab:

UUID=728e30cd-3074-4cd6-b38f-22d0bf916391 /home/david/Desktop/500mb ext3 defaults 0 0

The second on-board drive now mounts, but as well as mounting at the point indicated, I also get a hard drive icon - in other words the drive is duplicated on the Desktop - once in the folder called 500mb and once in an icon with the label of drive. It's not very tidy.

When I start using the removable drives, I will want a second user to be able to log in remotely and use his drives, which he will manually switch as required. I don't want all his drives showing up on my Desktop as icons.

Can anyone point me at the correct way to set up fstab?

thanks...

David.
