I'd really like to be able to reboot > afterwards ;-) As long as your current kernel is present in /boot, and you verify that it's still there after you `dpkg -r` the old kernel, you should be fine. If you're really nervous, re-run `apt-get install linux-image-generic` after you `dpkg -r` just to make sure. :)
