An alternative might be to explore the USBIP project.  Stick a cheap
netbook with a few USB cameras out in the field attached to a couple
of truck batteries, and use point-to-point Wifi back to your base
station.  Go out and swap the batteries once a week or so...

Weatherproofing and yet allowing the wifi signal out may be an issue.
