Thanks Rick,
That worked. I started Thunderbird in a terminal with the command:

thunderbird -chrome chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul

A small window popped up allowing me to do the reset. The master
password has been wiped.

PS. My problem with Firefox has been solved (sort of). I removed some ot
the addons and plugins and reinstalled it and them and now all is back
to normal speed. Unfortunately my internet seems to have slowed quite a lot.
