A nice way of learning Linux is going over to LFS and setting up your own system; http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/
As a primary system you'd want to be using as your main desktop in a Windows replacement context, you'll get more support from Ubuntu, but I can't fault either Ubuntu or Fedora. It's really a personal choice. Personally? go with Archlinux any day.
