You might want to have a look at the new Zenwalk Live Edition to run on the netbook

It is fast and has a relatively small footprint in terms of both CPU and memory consumption (in the installed version it loads with 50 Mb of RAM in the init 3 mode).At the same it has most of the applications one would need for everyday use as well as the 2.6.33.4 kernel
