Sadly, I think the presence of the read-only filesystem is going to
inhibit you from installing such packages. And I doubt there is a way to
make it read/write, as the filesystem is likely using something like
squashfs, which is basically like a gzipped tarball.

Like I said, your best bet is to use the read/write filesystem on the
hard drive. Or who knows — maybe OpenWrt (which supports putting a jffs2
partition on the flash) supports the device.
