If you're using libvirt to manage KVM (as Dean asked), then you _really_ want to be running something newer than that on the host. I'd recommend (at least) Lucid. Also, depending on what you're doing, you may want to run libvirt from a PPA (Lucid's will work, but upstream has fixed all kinds of shit that hasn't made it into Ubuntu yet; libvirt is moving fast [which is good]).
