Just for the record....
A simple upgrade to the 10.10 using the Synaptic GUI worked perfectly
first time. I'm not sure why the release notes were so cautionary. Maybe
any problem had been fixed in the meantime.

The cards in the first link are ancient, and were dropped from the
standard proprietary nvidia drivers.
Maybe try with the live CD first? You can upgrade from the CD I think.
