In my experience, Network Manager tends to work with USB mobile
broadband devices as well. Since that's the default networking
interface in most distros and James mentioned that he is new to
computers, it would be far easier for him to try that first and post
any specific problems to the list. Learning can come later, when he's
not frustrated with trying to get his hardware to work.

I strongly agree that the output of 'lsusb -v' is necessary to give
anything more than general advice, though.
