Can anyone recommend a simple crossword compilerthat will work on Ubuntu?

The one provided by the Department is as slow as a wet week and provides
crosswords unworthy of the name. Ideally, I'd like to use a list of, say,
fifteen surnames (ie., no clues) and it get on with fitting them into a
grid (generated also by the program).

Tried Sourceforge. The crosswords don't seem to be any better than the
Department's. I'm also tired of reading that "9 out of 12 names have been
fitted into a grid".

Anybody had any experience with a good compiler?

Regards,

William Bennett.
