Cripes — what are you filling it up with?

My fully loaded desktop PC which is pretty much a workhorse that hasn’t
been reinstalled since, gosh, 2008 or so (thus has a lot of cruft), uses
11GB on / (which includes everything except /home). It’s been used for
various modes of development over the years.

My netbook, which physically has a 4GB SSD for /, and a secondary 16GB
SSD for /home, uses only about 3.25GB on /.

(On a side note, the SSDs in my netbook — the ones that came with my Eee
901 — are complete crap. It’s faster to boot off a USB HDD than the
internal SSD, and when I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 I had to flash my
/dev/sda twice for it to boot successfully.)
