When you upgrade from one version of Ubuntu/Debian/... you are asked, during the set-up phase of each relevant package, if you want to replace your old configuration file with the one provided by the maintainer of the package. If you say yes then you lose your old configuration file for the package in question and a new one is provided. Often this is no problem, but if you have personalised the package - such as setting up your network - then you need to either retain your old configuration file OR go through the process (of setting up your network) again, from scratch.
