Hi One of the things I do after an upgrade is ... 'sudo apt-get install smartpm'. Then 'sudo smart update' and 'sudo smart upgrade' finds various things that apt-get might not find. After that I keep going around apt-get and smart commands to install everything. I don't know if this is a Unity dependency that is missing but it might be. If all else fails I install LXDE. 'sudo apt-get install lxde'. This might not give you the desktop you want but you should be able to login and do some things.
